Over the past decade, there's been a significant shift in how young people access the internet. In 2010, only 23% of 12-15-year-olds used mobile phones to go online. Fast forward to 2021, and a whopping 94% of them rely on mobile devices for their online activities. That's quite a dramatic increase!
But that's not all. Games consoles and smart TVs have joined the digital party. More and more young people are using them to access the internet and it’s a trend that seems to be on the rise. Tablets, however, may have reached their peak of popularity in 2019. Desktop and laptop computer use has been declining since 2014, but 2020 saw a temporary surge in their usage because of remote learning during the Covid-19 pandemic.
So, in a nutshell, mobile phones are the kings of internet access for today's teenagers, while other devices like consoles and smart TVs are catching up. Tablets seem to have had their heyday, while the pandemic gave desktop and laptop computers a bit of a revival. Times are changing, and so are the gadgets young people use to stay connected.
