On 24th August 2016, Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge joined young people in the drop in centre at Youthscape’s newly-refurbished HQ Bute Mills, where the Duke demonstrated his trick shots on the pool table and scored a goal on the PS4 FIFA16 game.
The Duke and Duchess were introduced to some of the young people who have benefitted from Youthscape’s work, including Holly Keany who received support when she moved into her own home having been brought up in the care system. Holly said “When I’m finding things difficult, I know I can come here and Youthscape will point me in the right direction.” The Duchess praised the young people, describing them as “courageous and strong.”
Kane Pope, who played pool with the Duke, described the meeting as a “once in a lifetime experience” saying that it was a privilege to introduce the Royal couple to the drop-in centre which feels like his second home.
Chris Curtis, CEO of Youthscape, spoke of the opportunities Bute Mills brings for working with young people in Luton and across the UK through training and resources for youth workers, saying. “I’m immensely proud that Bute Mills is part of the wider regeneration of this amazing town. Thousands of young people will be impacted by youth workers, who will be trained here by Youthscape in the coming years, learning innovative new approaches, researched, piloted and developed by our team.”
